Debt reduction is all about taking positive action. Firstly, you will need to change the way you see money. You need to treat it with respect. Imagine a life where there was no borrowing. You had to manage on the income that you have currently, and if you wanted to buy something beyond your financial constraints, you had to save for it.
Sounds horrifying doesn't it? Well years ago this is exactly what people did. Unfortunately, with lenders virtually throwing money at us, many of us have got into massive amounts of debt and don't quite know where to start with debt reduction.
You have to start with the basics. Now you already have debt, don't spend what you can't afford. If you do, you'll just get deeper and deeper into the debt myre. Take a step back and think logically.
Whatever debt you are in will need to be accounted for. Don't feel overwhelmed by it all, break it down into bite sized pieces. First of all, look at paying the debt that is costing you the most in interest. This is usually a credit or store card. If you are just managing to pay the minimum payment every month, it will take you forever and a day to pay off, and will cost you a fortune into the bargain.
Look for a 0% transfer to another card. Even if it's just for a period of six or twelve months, this will buy you some time and allow you to start paying some of the debt off instead of just the interest.
Think about what you are buying and the effect it will have on your debt reduction. Did you really need that new pair of shoes or was it just a whim? Could that $100 have been better spent on your debt reduction instead of adding to the debt misery? (You'll have probably forgotten all about them after a day or two, but your debt bill won't let you).
Think of things in terms of necessity. At least until your debt reduction is manageable. If you are disciplined now, you will have much more later. You need to plant in the spring to harvest in the fall.
